Currently our Intergeneration work revolves around two Care Homes for the Elderly, Melbury Court in Durham City and Greenways, Consett, both Helen McCardle care homes. Pupils from Bowes class and the Further Education Unit at school attend the care homes weekly on Friday mornings to engage with the residents playing Boccia, New Age Kurling and Skittles.
Students also socialise with the residents and enjoy sing-a-longs. Residents are also invited into school and have enjoyed performance of TinArts by students and the FEU’s Afternoon Teas. This work has proved to be very popular with the care homes and parents of Durham Trinity School and Sports College alike. It brings the community into our school and pupils develop great understanding of the elderly at the same time developing social skills engaging with the elderly population. Recently school has finished runners up in an Intergenerational Award and were highly commended for our on-going work.
